Improving social and economic situation of young sex workers and girls from vulnerable families in Kharkiv and Kyiv

Project goals
- Establish youth-friendly services in the Drop-In Centre for sex workers managed by Kharkiv NGO “Blago”;
- Develop capacity of staff in the Kiev Drop-In Centre for street children in working with vulnerable families;
- Train law enforcement officers from the project sites on the specifics of working with youth at risk;
- Provide capacity building training to develop a network of governmental service providers that can provide non-judgmental, effective health care services to underage female sex workers;
- Provide training for government officials to improve attitudes towards underage sex workers and promote governmental support for health and social programmes for this group.
Achievements
- Gender and age specific aspects are included in the work of the service providers in Kiev and Kharkiv;
- 3695 vulnerable girls and young sex workers in two cities received at least one service, and 126 girls and their families received long-term social support for the period of 3-6 month, which helped to improve the quality of their lives;
- The model of care and support for underage sex workers with the component of case management was developed, piloted and is available for replication;
- Special training module titled “Toward Yourself” was developed for young girls aged 14-25, and introduced in the curriculum of vocational schools in the city of Kharkiv.
