We leave for Gremi, Kakheti, early in the morning to avoid the summer heat. In the car on the back seat, me and Vazha Kasrelishvili, an employee of Tanadgoma \u2013 Center for Information and Counseling on Reproductive Health, and next to the driver there is 32-year-old Lado. A few months ago, he actively used drugs and alcohol, risked his health, was sentenced to four years of imprisonment. Now he has a remission, and our mission is to take Lado to a <\/em><\/strong>suburban psychosocial rehabilitation<\/em> center in Gremi. In Georgia, this is the only institution of this type. Vano Ratiani, instructor-consultant<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em><\/strong>and<\/em><\/strong> another beneficiary will meet us there.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lado decided to say goodbye to drugs and alcohol for good. The specialists of the rehabilitation center will help him to cope with this difficult task. Lado says that he is ready to endure physical and emotional discomfort. Lado left the mobile phone, with which he was not separated from it, at home, to temporarily lose contact with the outside world and hedge himself against “temptations.”<\/p>\n

Lado’s addictions (alcohol and drug abuse) are the chain of his personal tragic sequences. At first, his father and mother died, and then a young wife died of an overdose. Lado fell into depression and lost the goal in life.<\/p>\n

On the way to the center, we pick up \"\"

Since April 2016, the instructors-consultants Levan and Vano helped several clients to cope with psychological dependence. There were also cases when those who had come to receive help did not make it and returned to the old way of life.<\/p>\n

There is one more employee in the rehabilitation center \u2013 a psychologist, who from time to time comes to Gremi.<\/p>\n

In the car, we on purpose talked quite loudly about the services of the center that the half-asleep Lado could hear us.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not have yet perfect conditions, so we can provide services for only three people at one time. However, in September, <\/em>after the completion of repairs, we<\/em> would be able to provide rehabilitation services to 12-13 clients. We bought the building of the center from our own organization\u2019s funds. So, Gremi became an integral part of a large project \u2013 \u201cBridging the Gaps: Health and Rights for Key Populations<\/a>“. The project in Georgia is aimed at ensuring the human rights of drug users by changing social attitudes and government policies, and improving the services they can access. Financial support is provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the International Charitable Foundation \u201cAIDS Foundation East-West\u201d (AFEW-Ukraine)\u201d,<\/em> Vazha Kasrelishvili<\/strong> said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Vazha Kasrelishvili came up with the idea of establishing a psycho-social center for drug users in 2001 after he had learned about the network of such centers in Poland. Two years ago, during his visit to Ukraine, he happened to live at a rehabilitation center in the village of Ploske, where Vazha lived with local beneficiaries for two weeks.<\/p>\n

“I learned how effective this type of centers was, and saw people who successfully undergone the rehabilitation process. Today they got adrenaline not with drugs, but from sober life.<\/em>“<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The uniqueness of the rehabilitation center in Gremi is that it is isolated from the urban environment. The center has its own large yard with the potential for building social enterprises and providing art therapy. Instructors here are people who have already made their thorny way of drug use; it makes our work with beneficiaries easier.<\/p>\n

In the center “Tanadgoma” services for people with alcohol addiction are being provided as well. The first beneficiary had a problem like that. Now he is doing well, he showed excellent results of rehabilitation.<\/p>\n

Gremi meets us with tranquility. The building of the center is three-storey, with fresh traces of repair on the windows.<\/p>\n

Lado has a big bag in the car. It looks like he decided to stay for a long time.\"\"

All services of the center, including meals, are free of charge. In order to get to the \u0421enter, it is desirable not to have a physical dependence on drugs and alcohol, but to have a desire for recovery.<\/p>\n

“Only the will of relatives and friends is not enough for the complete recovery of a person. He must want by himself. He must be tired of dependence. If someone wants to leave the Center, the gate is always open. If the local rules are broken, our ways diverge. According to the regime, the rise is at nine o’clock in the morning, in the evening, at eleven they going to sleep. The whole day is loaded with various activities: meditation, cleaning, group therapy, writing, watching and analyzing of films, discussing “steps”, etc. We do not talk about politics, we are not obsessed with the past, we do not deceive ourselves and each other<\/em>“, explains consultant-instructor Levan Gviniashvili<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Once, Levan also used drugs; “Jeff” resulted him in Parkinson’s disease, and Levan was treated. He became an activist of the community of drug users, and then an instructor in the Center.<\/p>\n

The rough wooden stairs take you up to the second floor. Soon there will be a bedroom thanks to EU funding. Two rooms are prepared for female clients.<\/p>\n

On the ground floor there will be a dining room and administrative rooms, and on the third floor \u2013 sports equipment, in the courtyard \u2013 a corner has already been selected \u2013 an additional building for the studio of ceramics and art therapy.<\/p>\n

Dinner time is approaching. The cook is a local resident. In general, the population of the village is loyal to the Center work.<\/p>\n

While eating, Lado is silent, but when I turn on the recorder, does not hold back tears. Lado describes how he lost his family and himself.<\/p>\n

Lado<\/strong> doesn\u2019t want to live like this anymore: “For 24 hours I was only thinking how to get money. I was up to anything. I got out of prison. I have painful headaches… Gremi is my chance.<\/em>“<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The instructor-consultant Vano Ratiani doesn\u2019t make early predictions what would happen to Lado. It all depends on whether he recognizes his illness, whether he can live in strict regime, how he will survive the first difficult days. If he doesn’t “stand”, and want to leave, he would be taught how to move away from the circle of people who use drugs and alcohol.<\/p>\n

“The first step of “12 steps” begins with the recognition of the weakness of your own illness; then gratitude to those who accepted and apologies to the family us comes, etc. We deeply interfere in someone else’s life, but if a person hears us, he can start everything from a new sheet<\/em>“, \u2013 Vano Ratiani<\/em> <\/strong>is assured.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
